Silos & Silences: A Forum Shedding Light on Child Welfare & Immigration

Mar 4, 2022

On March 4th 2022, The Border(ing) practices research team hosted a knowledge sharing community forum to explore how immigration status shapes child welfare services with immigrant families in Ontario and British Columbia.

Featuring speakers and facilitators in the sectors of gender-based violence, legal rights, child welfare and anti-Black racism advocacy, this forum served as a space for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and to build collective consciousness. A panel and interactive series of workshops explored needs and concerns related to child welfare practices for children and families with precarious immigration status. Panellists included Travonne Edwards from the Black Community Action Network in Peel, Mary Birdsell from Justice for Children and Youth, Monica Larios, a Peer Champion from OCASI, and Shaoli Choudhury from YWCA Vancouver and moderated by Keisha Facey from the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies.
